Hotel History

There has probably been an inn and a tryst at the current site of the Amulree Country Hotel ever since early man moved cattle around the hills of Perthshire. The present building was erected in 1714 around which time Amulree was at the junction of three major droves.  It formed part of the route Highland drovers would use to bring their livestock to the cattle market at Crieff and Falkirk. Drovers would come from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland meeting at Dunkeld before taking the route of the current A822 through Amulree to Crieff. They would cover about 12 miles per day which made Amulree a strategic stop on the Dunkeld to Crieff leg.

Nevertheless these were troubled times for Scotland and a great deal of unrest had arisen as a result of the Act of Union in 1707. Perthshire saw much military activity as villages and towns changed hands between Jacobites and Government forces. Around this time the Amulree Country Hotel, sitting astride Wades military road, became a King's House and Bonnie Prince Charlie is reputed to have stopped here on his way to his last fateful engagement at Culloden.

It was William Wordsworth, the renowned poet, who bestowed the name of 'The Lonely Inn' on the hotel during a visit in 1803. The Amulree Country Hotel became a Coaching House before being extended in the 1930s to take on the shape it has today. Since then, many celebrities have enjoyed the hospitality of the establishment. These include Scottish entertainers such as Jimmy Logan but also the world famous actress Greer Garson!
