During one of the worst Februarys in memory, the Highland Army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart lifted it’s siege of Stirling Castle, abandoned the town and marched north.
The army crossed the Forth on 1st February 1746 moving toward Crieff. After a brief respite in Crieff, the army withdrew along Wades military road en route to Dunkeld, they then marched the long high road toward Inverness, the north, Culloden and defeat.
Just under half a days march, out from Crieff lay the Kirk and hamlet of Amulree with its Kings house and stategic bridge (1740). In the appalling weather conditions a stoop of mulled wine and a dram of whisky at the Inn stiffened the will to move on
